The University Boat Race is one of the oldest sporting competitions in the world, having its inaugral race way back in 1829.
Last year saw the Cambridge men beat Oxford by 1 1/3 lengths in a time of 18:18, extending their overall lead to 86-81. They also walked away with the women's title for the sixth year in a row, by a massive 4 1/2 lengths.
The best place to watch the 4.25 mile race is from one of the many riverside pubs along the route, starting on the Fulham side of Putney Bridge (this is known as the 'Middlesex' side - the other side is called 'Surrey'). The closest tube station to the beginning is Putney Bridge.
Putney Embankment and Bishops Park will give you a great view of the starting section. Bishops Park usually put up some food stalls, family attractions and a beer tent behind the South Stand of Craven Cottage. They usually put up a big TV as well so you can watch the conclusion of the race.
Hammersmith Bridge marks the midway point of the race (about 6 mins 20 secs in) and the bend of the river will really start to favour one side over the other. If your side is leading at Hammersmith then the chances are they'll go on to win. There's usually a big TV set up on the north bank (at the very top of the bend). The closest tube stations to this section are Hammersmith and Ravenscourt Park.
Barnes Bridge is a great place to see them nearing the end, whilst Dukes Meadows and Chiswick Bridge will let you view the finish.
The race comes to an end just before Chiswick Bridge.
