Trooping the Colour is one of the best free events in London. But did you know that they also hold a big rehearsal one week before? This year HRH The Princess of Wales will be taking the salute, in her role as Regimental Colonel of the Irish Guards. (A second rehearsal, called the Major General's Review, is held one week earlier.)

The upside of attending this rehearsal is that it's far less crowded than the real thing, so if you want to take your little kids to see some soldiers then it's perfect. You don't get to see the RAF flypast, or the rest of the Royal Family standing on the balcony, but you do get to see up to 1450 soldiers from the Household Division and the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, alongside 400 musicians from the Massed Bands.

If you don't want to pay for a ticket in Horse Guards then you can line the Mall from 9 AM and watch the soldiers marching past, but if you want to sit inside the parade ground then you'll need to apply for a ticket. See kbp.army.mod.uk for more details.

You might like to check out our page of military parades in London as well, because there are plenty more gun salutes and daily parades throughout the year.
