More than a million revellers are expected to descend on West London over the August Bank Holiday for Europe's biggest street festival.

The Notting Hill Carnival is a colourful celebration of Caribbean culture with live bands, decorated floats and plenty of food and drink and excitement (and lots of noise!). Extravagantly clothed dancers, steel bands and calypso kings will all add to the colour. It's one of the best annual events in London's calendar.

The parade route begins in Great Western Road (at the junction with Elkstone Road), before turning left along Westbourne Park Road and then south down Chepstow Road. It will then turn right along Westbourne Grove, and north up Ladbroke Grove. The route will then continue north all the way up to the junction with Kensal Road.

Sunday is always known as 'Family Day', and if you have little kids then this is probably the one you should attend because the main parade on Bank Holiday Monday will be incredibly busy.

Be aware that due to the huge numbers of people attending Ladbroke Grove station is usually closed for safety reasons. Other stations nearby might also close at short notice, or might only allow you to exit (so you won't be able to enter them to catch a train home). Most of the local roads will be pedestrian only, and buses will not be able to enter the carnival area. Buses usually begin from Notting Hill Gate instead (south of the carnival area), or from the Prince of Wales pub in Harrow Road (north of the carnival area).
