Your comments and questions

BB Can I buy a Visitor Oyster card at Heathrow Airport?

Staff Hi BB. No, you can buy a normal blue Oyster card, but not a Visitor Oyster card. You can only buy those outside London (Heathrow is on the tube network, so they count it as London). But they are basically the same thing anyway. The only difference is the Visitor Oyster card comes with some credit pre-loaded onto it, whereas the Oyster card doesn't (but you can say how much you want when you buy it). And you won't get the book of discount vouchers.

Rachel Hi. Does the Heathrow Express go straight through to terminal 5 without changes?

Staff Hi Rachel. It does, yes. You have to get a transfer if you want terminal 4, but not terminal 5

Peggy Hello, my boss is traveling to London and he needs to get from London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 to Northampton. I've been online trying to figure out if he takes 'The Tube' or a train. One of our employees said he should take Tube from Heathrow to London and then a train to Northampton b/c it'll be less walking. But I can't find any place that says you can take the Tube from Terminal 5; all I can find is the Heathrow Express and I don't think that's a Tube. Please advise. Thanks.

Staff Hi Peggy. The Heathrow Express is an overground train - but it only goes to Paddington. So your boss would then have to catch a tube train from Paddington to Euston, because that's where the National Rail trains to Northampton leave from. Or he could get a tube train straight from Terminal 5. But the Piccadilly line doesn't go direct to Euston either, so he could either change tube trains at King's Cross and catch the Victoria line back to Euston, or he could just walk to Euston from King's Cross, because it's only about ten minutes on foot.

Peggy Oh my, he's gong to love that! But thank you very much for your help, Peggy

PH How do I get from Terminal 5 arrivals hall to the tube station?

Staff Hi PH. If you look at the last page of this PDF map then you'll see the entrance to the underground in the arrivals hall - maps.heathrow.com/?poiId=509

Dale Arriving at Heathrow and have an Oyster card already. Taking the tube to meet someone at Hammersmith and then to Ealing Broadway to switch to GWR to Cardiff. Wouldn't think I should tap out from the zone 6 to 2 airport ride and just wait inside for them?

Staff Hi Dale. If you tap out of the gate then that will be the end of that journey. When you tap in again you will start a new journey, and you'll have to pay a second fare - even though it's the same station. So you might just want to just wait inside the gate for them.

JM Hi, we will be going to London next Friday and are looking for the most direct route from Heathrow to Covent Garden and then return from Covent Garden to Heathrow on Sunday. Could you please advise?

Staff Hi JM, i would just get the london underground. the piccadilly line goes direct all the way to covent garden - city-guide.london/transport/train-journey.php?from=heathrow-terminal-5&to=covent-garden

JM Thank you for this. When i tried to search the route online, some of the apps suggested exiting at Leicester station instead of Covent Garden. Can i also get to Heathrow T5 directly from Covent Garden on Sunday?

Staff You could do that if you wanted to, actually, because it's only a 3 minute walk between the two stations (literally 3 minutes). So maybe the place you're visiting is closer to Leicester Square station. The first piccadilly line train on a sunday is about half-5 in the morning, and it's an hour long journey, so it depends when your plane is leaving

Alan Does a senior Railcard get a discount on the tube?

Staff Hi Alan. Not all tube journeys. The ones where you can get a discount are described here: city-guide.london/transport/senior-train-fares.php

Thea This has been so informative, thank you! We are two senior ladies visiting in November 2023, and need to get to Covent Garden. Initially I had booked taxis - really expensive. But after reading this, I think we could try to get the underground from T5 to Green Park, and only taxi from there? We are trying to avoid stairs and I believe Covent Garden is small and busy? My bigger concern though is on the return trip, we have to leave our accommodation 04:30 in the morning and it will be dark and winter. Is the only way then taxi please?

Staff Hi Thea. Covent Garden is very small. It does have a lift but you’d also have to climb 19 steps. Theres no way to avoid those unfortunately. Everyone has to use the lift to get out, so it can get pretty busy as everyone tries to leave the platforms. The piccadilly line runs all through the night on Fridays and Saturdays, for the whole 24 hours, so you might be all right depending on which day you're leaving. But on all the other days the first train from Green Park isn’t until 05:48, so theres not much you can do apart from a taxi.

Brian Can I use a Travel Oyster card to go from Heathrow Terminal 5 to Canary Wharf? If so, would you please provide the routing for me? If not, is there any Travel Card for visitors that I can purchase that will work? Sorry about all of the questions but I like to be prepared ahead of time.

Staff HI Brian. If you mean an actual travelcard then you can do, but it will need to cover zones 1-6 (you choose the zones when you buy it). If you mean a normal Oyster card then that will work as well, because the credit you load onto it is valid in all of the zones. The Elizabeth line goes direct all the way to Canary Wharf - city-guide.london/transport/train-journey.php?from=heathrow-terminal-5&to=canary-wharf

Tina What is the best option(without too many steps) to get from Heathrow-Terminal 3 to St. James Park (Conrad Hotel)?

Staff Hi Tina. If you change onto the District line at Acton Town then you can use a lift between platforms, but unfortunately there's nothing you can do at St. James's Park because you'll definitely have to use two flights of stairs. They don't have escalators or a lift. The Conrad Hotel is just around the corner, so getting off at Westminster instead will give you a 10 minute walk

Lucie Arriving at Heathrow airport next month ,going to Whitechapel ,what is the best route by the tube ? Thanks

Staff Hi Lucie. You can just get the Elizabeth line - city-guide.london/transport/train-journey.php?from=heathrow-terminal-5&to=whitechapel
