Peak and off-peak journey times

For Oyster and contactless off-peak is outside the hours of 6.30 AM-9.30 AM and 4 PM-7 PM (Mon-Fri). For travelcards off-peak is any time after 9.30 AM (Mon-Fri). Weekends and public holidays are always classed as off-peak. Note: Between the 8th March and 31st May 2024 TFL are running a trial called ‘Off-Peak Friday Fares’, where Fridays will be classed as off-peak all day.

The underground fare is based on what time your journey begins. It doesn’t matter what time your journey ends.

Your comments and questions

Claire Where is the best place to meet in Waterloo station, if I want to tell my friend to meet me? She doesn't know London either and neither do I and we are arriving at different times

Staff I would tell her to meet underneath the big clock. It is in the centre of the station hanging from the ceiling, and you can't miss it. That's also where the official meeting point is (right by the information desk)

Audrey H I will need two tickets on the tube from Waterloo to Euston for myself and my sister using my contactless card - how do I do this? We are two over 70 year old pensioners and this is all a bit new!

Staff Hi Audrey. Contactless cards are pretty easy. All you have to do is touch them against the big yellow Oyster card readers by the gate and the fare will be deducted automatically. But you can't pay for two tickets on one card like that. You will each need your own card. If you need to buy a second ticket for your sister on your own contactless card then you can just buy one from the self-service machine beforehand.

PCook Hi can you please tell me if I can get a bus from Waterloo station to Hyde Park Corner please? And if so what number please. Can I buy tickets on the bus? Thanks

Staff Hi PCook. There's no direct bus, but there are loads of different ways you could catch two buses. You could get the 211 to Victoria, and then the 38 or 73 to Hyde Park Corner. You can't buy tickets on the bus anymore, or pay with cash either. You need to get an Oyster card or travelcard beforehand, or just touch your contactless card (your bank card) down on the reader.

Raymond Can I get a bus from Waterloo to marble arch

Staff Hi Raymond. Not directly, but you could get the 507 to Victoria station and then change to the 73

Marion Hi I travelled from London Waterloo to Euston last Wednesday morning at 9am and returned from Euston to London Waterloo at about 5pm. I used my contactless card and seem to have been charged £12. Why would this be and how do I get the refund I think I am due. Thanks

Staff Hi Marion. When this kind of thing happens it's usually because the person forgot to tap down on one of the gates. Sometimes the train station staff open the gates at one end to speed the flow of people towards the exit - that's when lots of people forget to tap down. Maybe that's what it was? If you forget to tap down at both ends then the computer can't work out what your journey was, so it charges you the maximum possible amount for that line (all the way to the end of the line). My guess would be that it has charged you the daily cap for zones 1-5, because zone 5 is the end of the line on the Waterloo-Euston route.

Maggie Perhaps a silly question, but is the bakerloo an underground line?

Staff Hi Maggie. It is, yes. It's the brown line on the underground map

Edmund Where do I buy a ticket for London Waterloo to Colindale? Can I buy it at home station Milford (Surrey)?

Staff Hi Edmund. You wouldn't be able to buy a single journey ticket from Waterloo to Colindale at Milford. It's not possible to buy it online in advance either, but you can buy a 1-day travelcard for zones 1-4 online in advance if you want. The only place you could get Waterloo to Colindale is from the ticket machine when you arrive into Waterloo. But the easiest thing to do is just use your contactless card to pay. Then you won't need a ticket

Nikki If I travel from London Waterloo to London Bridge on the tube is it eastbound or westbound

Staff Hi Nikki. Travelling from Waterloo to London Bridge is eastbound

AllisonP Can I take a non-folding bicycle from Waterloo to Canning Town in non-peak hours?

Staff Hi Allison. As far as we know, you can't. Not even during off-peak hours. The only stretches of the jubilee line where you're allowed to take a non-folded bike outside of peak hours is between canning town and stratford, and finchley road to stanmore. Unfortunately neither of those cover your route. Here is TFL's map of where you can take a bike: content.tfl.gov.uk/cycles-on-public-transport-map.pdf

Anna How many escalators are at Waterloo station?

Staff Hi Anna. It depends which line you’re using. If you look in the ‘Platform stairs, lifts and escalators’ section above it says how many there are to each

Magdalena Hello what metro came from London Greenwich north to Waterloo

Staff Hi Magdalena. It would have been the Jubilee line - city-guide.london/transport/train-journey.php?from=north-greenwich&to=waterloo

JJ If I would like to travel from King Cross to the County Hall, which exit that I should leave from Waterloo station ? Where can I find the map of Waterloo station ? Pls advise. Thank you.

Staff Hi JJ. Have a look at this map and see the exit which says Victory Arch - nationalrail.co.uk/stations/london-waterloo/

Angela I will be travelling with a person who has reduced mobility and is unsteady on escalators. Is there a lift that we can use? We will be travelling from Waterloo to Green park on the Jubilee line.

Staff Hi Angela. theres a lift from the main concourse down to the Jubilee line. You’ll have to enter the station from York Road, though, because the other entrances have stairs

Sarah Y I will be coming to Waterloo station on the overground train and want to get to London Bridge via the underground with my mother who cannot manage stairs and uses a wheeled walking frame. Are there lifts at Waterloo to get to Jubilee line and is the walk underground all on one level? Also is there a lift up to street level from London Bridge underground?

Staff Hi Sarah. There is a lift from the overground platforms down to the Jubilee line platforms at Waterloo. Not sure what you mean by 'is the walk underground all on one level' -- you don't have to use stairs or escalators if you use the lift. There's a lift at London Bridge as well, but only to the Station Approach and Tooley Street exits. You have to use an escalator to the Borough High Street exit

Sarah Thank you 👍
