Parade route to Westminster Abbey

The State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will begin at 10.44 AM when her coffin is carried out of the north door of Westminster Hall by The Queen's Company 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, and placed on the State Gun Carriage of the Royal Navy - the same one that was used during the State Funeral of Queen Victoria, George V, George VI and Winston Churchill.

The State Gun Carriage will then make the short journey round the side of Parliament Square to the west door of Westminster Abbey in a slow procession, pulled on ropes by 142 sailors from the Royal Navy.

The procession will be led by the massed pipes and drums of Scottish and Irish Regiments, and followed by senior members of the Royal Family, as they did for the funeral of Princess Diana and Prince Philip.

The coffin will arrive at the West Gate of Westminster Abbey at 10.52 AM.

Funeral service inside Westminster Abbey

The service will begin at 11 AM with a congregation of over 2,000 people made up of the Royal Family, foreign Royalty, former Prime Ministers, foreign Heads of State, leading politicians and other senior dignitaries.

The service will be conducted by the Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle, and a sermon will be delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

At 11.55 AM the Last Post will sound and the nation will hold a 2-minute silence. The service will come to an end at 12 noon with the National Anthem and a Lament played by the Queen's Piper.

Parade route to Wellington Arch

The Queen's coffin will then be placed back on the State Gun Carriage and will be carried in another slow procession to Wellington Arch.

The 1.7 mile route will go back round Parliament Square and along Whitehall past the Cenotaph, then through the central arch of Horse Guards. After crossing the parade ground and receiving a Royal salute from the King's Life Guard, the coffin will travel up the Mall past Buckingham Palace one final time where it will receive another salute from the King's Guard, then travel up Constitution Hill.

The Royals will once again be marching behind the coffin, flanked by the King's Body Guards of The Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms, plus several detachments of the British Armed Forces and Mounties from the Royal Canadian Police.

Whilst all of this is happening the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery will be firing their guns every minute in Hyde Park, and the sound of Big Ben tolling will carry across London.

At 1 PM the coffin will reach Wellington Arch and be transferred to the State hearse. Members of the Royal Family will then get into cars for the 2-hour drive to Windsor Castle.

State hearse's arrival at Windsor Castle

At 3.05 PM the State hearse will reach a new procession which will form up at Shaw Farm Gate on Albert Road, and will pick up an escort party made up of members of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, a detachment of the Household Cavalry Regiment and Coldstream Guards, and the massed pipes and drums of Scottish and Irish Regiments.

At 3.10 PM this new procession will set off down the Long Walk towards the castle, with minute guns fired by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

At 3.40 PM the procession will enter Windsor Castle's Quadrangle, and at 3.53 PM the coffin will enter St. George's Chapel.

Burial service at St. George's Chapel

The Committal Service will begin at 4 PM and prior to the final hymn the Imperial State Crown, Orb and Sceptre will be removed from the top of the coffin. When the final hymn ends the Lord Chamberlain will break his wand of office and the coffin will be lowered into the Royal Vault.

At 7.30 PM the Queen's private burial will take place inside the Royal Vault, where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband Prince Philip, her father King George VI, and the Queen Mother.

Your comments and questions

Peter M Hello. How early do you think we should arrive if we want to see the procession?

Staff Hi Peter. No one can tell you for sure, but I imagine you’ll almost certainly have to arrive the previous day because it’s a very short route. It doesn’t go down the Mall or through Horse Guards, it’s literally just out of Parliament, down one side of Parliament Square, and then into the Abbey. You might be better off finding one of the big screens they’ll be setting up in the Royal Parks.

Julia lumb What's the route of the procession after the service on Monday? Will it go back up the along whitehall and up the mall?

Staff Hi Julia. We havent seen an official announcement about the entire route yet, but the assumption is that it will be the same as yesterday, but in reverseā€¦ so through the central arch of Horse Guards and across the parade ground, then up the Mall. Once it gets to Buckingham Palace it will go up Constitution Hill to Wellington Arch.
