The Courtauld Gallery will be presenting a remarkable series of drawings by Frank Auerbach, called The Charcoal Heads, will be shown together for the first time as a comprehensive group.

The hauntingly beautiful drawings were made during the 1950s and early 1960s, and will be shown alongside a selection of other paintings he made of the same sitters.

Auerbach spent months perfecting each drawing, constantly working and reworking them during his numerous sessions with the subjects.

The images emerge from the darkness of the charcoal as if appearing after a lengthy period of struggle – perhaps a metaphor for the post-war years, when people were remaking their lives after the destructions of war.
